Charlottesville DSA Housing Justice
The Charlottesville DSA Housing Justice team works to fight evictions and organize for tenant power in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been fighting to work against the wave of evictions that has accompanied widespread job loss and economic hardship. Our anti-eviction work includes:
canvassing and flyering with information about tenant resources and legal rights;
talking to tenants and providing resources outside the courtroom on days when courts are hearing evictions;
observing eviction proceedings and recording data on court proceedings;
advocating for strong tenant protections outside the courtroom.
In addition to our anti-eviction work, we work closely with tenants in their struggles for better living conditions and agency in their housing situations. We are committed to promoting tenant power and the vision of a Charlottesville that recognizes housing as a human right, rather than seeing it as a commodity.
If you’d like to get involved, you can email us at housing.cvilledsa@gmail.com. We also have a number of resources for organizing for housing justice collected here (last updated June 2020).
